Is there anyone out there keeping bees in a HTBH? When I mention it to other bee keepers they look at me like I have 3rd eye |

You'll find that to be a common response. Don't let it discourage you, you might find a commercial keep or two that are familiar and encouraging about them. |

Thanks for the encouragement. Ill keep trying. The ones I have found seem to be ignorant about them or have tried them once and decided they didn't like them. |

I think the problem may be that such people try to apply their conventional beekeeping practices to TBHs, usually because that is all they know. Framed hives are much easier if you are going to follow conventional methods.
The beauty of Natural beekeeping methods is that they can be applied to pretty well any hive.
Good luck finding some "natural" local support, but plenty (both good and not so good) can be learned from conventional beekeepers, you just have to be prepared to weed out the stuff you are not comfortable with.
Regards

How is your hive(s) going? Mine (1) was going like gang busters then they swarmed high on a tree and I couldn't retrieve them. The remaining bees have since reared a new queen from one of the eggs that the old queen left. (It appears) Been quite the experience I'll tell you. |

It's been an adventure. My first package had the queen leave/squished or some other Denise. Ended up with a laying worker. Dumped the hive this past Wednesday by brushing off all the bees from the comb and put in a new package and queen. Hopefully it works, but the new package is nothing like the first package. The second package hasn't cleaned the dead bees from the bottom of the tbh yet. They just don't don't seem to be as focused. |

I'm interested in starting up a TBH, and I live in Carol Stream. I'm brand new to this, and learning as much as I can before I set up a hive in the spring.
Has anyone found an experienced keeper in the area that uses TBH or natural bee keeping to act as a mentor? If not, how has it been learning mostly on your own?
I figure if there aren't many established TBHs in the area, maybe we can make our own support group to help figure things out.
In any case -- I know its late in the year -- but if anyone feels like showing off their TBH so a newb like me can learn first-hand, let me know! |

Conserving wild bees
Research suggests that bumble bee boxes have a very low success rate in actually attracting bees into them. We find that if you create an environment where first of all you can attract mice inside, such as a pile of stones, a drystone wall, paving slabs with intentionally made cavities underneath, this will increase the success rate.
Most bumble bee species need a dry space about the size a football, with a narrow entrance tunnel approximately 2cm in diameter and 20 cm long. Most species nest underground along the base of a linear feature such as a hedge or wall. Sites need to be sheltered and out of direct sunlight.
There is a spectacular display of wild bee hotels here
