If I was in the US I would do exactly what Michael Bush does. Run foundationless frames in a Lang but using all mediums so you have a OSB system just like managing a Warre. You can’t remove and inspec ...

Ok, I see what has happened with your insulation area. (Generally known as the quilt.) if the bottom of the quilt is made with hessian/burlap as in the original Warre design, the bees can chew through ...

I have heard others say the bees can be reluctant to move down although I have not had this happen. I agree with Dave, moving one comb down gives them a ladder to work with and should do the trick. Pe ...

I agree with both of the above posts and it's clear you have had a difficult year. Leave alone until spring and if you can separate and remedy the cross combing that would be ideal. If it is so badly ...

Again I agree with Barbara. Bearding in hot weather is common and not necessarily a sign of swarming. However in mild weather in May/ June I would put my money on pre swarming behaviour. They could be ...

There are many things you could use for insulation but I would urge you to think if you really need it. You could end up just trapping moisture within the material used in the gable and have a soggy m ...

I like Option 1. However, if you want to cut the risk of losing a swarm, you can try Option 4, The Taranov swarm. You will need to get your timing right though.

I lose swarms from my garden hives most years. It seems they don't tend to hang up anywhere close by. They just come out of the hive and then straight into the woods some 500 metres away. So this yea ...

For the time being, yes, leave them alone. Don't go worrying about swarming yet. I would then do it in two stages. First, do what you suggested and in mid April, give them space by increasing to 6/7 b ...

Conserving wild beesResearch suggests that bumble bee boxes have a very low success rate in actually attracting bees into them. We find that if you create an environment where first of all you can attract mice inside, such as a pile of stones, a drystone wall, paving slabs with intentionally made cavities underneath, this will increase the success rate. Most bumble bee species need a dry space about the size a football, with a narrow entrance tunnel approximately 2cm in diameter and 20 cm long. Most species nest underground along the base of a linear feature such as a hedge or wall. Sites need to be sheltered and out of direct sunlight. There is a spectacular display of wild bee hotels here More about bumblebees and solitary bees here Information about the Tree Bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum)
